PROBONO Bulletin - Winter 2008 - (Page 11) fEATURE SToRy Following the enactment of the GGWP program, two organizations, Bet Tzedek and Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, developed the Holocaust Survivors Justice Network, a groundbreaking national network of lawyers who are providing free legal assistance to survivors applying for this reparation of Euro 2,000. After identifying cities in which there are major survivor populations, Bet Tzedek asked major law firms and in-house legal departments from within those cities to help set up and staff a local clinical structure. Our lawyers responded enthusiastically to the call for assistance, hosting a nationwide training for law firms who were coordinating the effort in each city and volunteering to coordinate the program in Washington, DC, Chicago and San Francisco. In addition, our lawyers have volunteered at clinics in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Seattle and Baltimore. The process in the US has not only helped numerous survivors, many of whom live barely above the poverty level, to obtain critical financial assistance, but also has been rewarding for our lawyers, who have had the chance to sit down and talk one-on-one with a survivor. At Bet Tzedek’s request, New Perimeter, DLA Piper’s nonprofit affiliate devoted to international pro bono, has taken the Holocaust Survivors Justice Network international in response to concerns about the availability of assistance to survivors outside the US who wish to apply for the GGWP program. Although many countries have made progress in assisting eligible survivors, New Perimeter is taking steps to organize pro bono programs in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, where a need for legal help remains. For the large community of Holocaust survivors in Budapest, Horváth & Partners Law Firm DLA Piper Weiss-Tessbach has prepared a Hungarian version of the GGWP application and will provide pro bono assistance to survivors. DLA Phillips Fox, with support from New Perimeter and US lawyers, also has expressed an interest in operating similar pro bono clinics in Australia.
