PROBONO Bulletin - Winter 2008 - (Page 13) NATIoNAL NEWS DLA Piper Team Updates Important Research on the Rights of Homeless youth A nationwide DLA Piper team assisted the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty (NLCHP) in updating its 2003 publication: Alone Without a Home: A State-by-State Review of Laws Affecting Unaccompanied Youth. The Alone Without a Home manual has been a valuable asset to attorneys and others helping youth who are living on their own, often because they are escaping physical or sexual violence at home. Recent, important changes to the law affecting these children, however, made a comprehensive update of the manual necessary. “The project represented an amazing demonstration of DLA Piper’s resources,” says Rebecca Jones (Austin), who led the team of 35 attorneys from across the country. “It also showed the willingness of our lawyers and staff to pitch in for an important project.” In addition to updating the publication, the team researched several new areas of the law and expanded the healthcare chapter. “My research on state healthcare laws revealed that children’s legal rights vary greatly from state to state,” says Nicole Madigan (Chicago), who developed a research plan for the revised chapter. “This illustrated the importance of providing this comprehensive review to more effectively advocate on behalf of these children.” The updated manual will be published this winter. The Alone Without a Home team included Meredith Fitzpatrick, Joseph Ford, David Jones, Rebecca Jones, Hannal Neal, Deborah Sours and Courtney Stewart (all Austin); Kelly Brennan (Baltimore); Barbara Chuang, Sean McKay and Patrick Sukeforth (all Boston); JB Allen, John Gribbin, Jonathan Helton, Nicole Madigan, Erick Ottoson, Julie Pabarja, Tobi Pinsky, Darrell Taylor and Sarah Weiying Wang (all Chicago); Sonya Braunschweig and Joanne Stone (all Minnesota); Amanda Holzhauer, Lauren Manton and Amy Silver (all New York); Camilla Butler, Rebecca Davis, Laura Kam and Jeffrey Meyerson (all Phoenix); Meto Koloski, Matt Lepore, James Rathvon, Martin Schaefermeier and Jessica Woolley (all Washington, DC). WHAT oUR CLIENTS SAy ABoUT US "We were very happy with both the process and the outcome of the project," wrote Maria Foscarinis, Executive Director of the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, in a thank you note to the firm.
