PROBONO Bulletin - Winter 2008 - (Page 16) mAPPING ImPACT CHICAGo SEATTLE Members of our Seattle office recently took ninth place in a city-wide “Food Frenzy” contest to raise funds for Food Lifeline to feed hungry children. Their efforts included a silent auction, food collections, bake sale, potluck, book/CD/DVD sale and other activities. In all, they raised enough money to provide 32,638 meals, enough to feed over 30 people for an entire year! after extensive litigation, andrew gifford and Chad Richman succeeded in securing compensation for an inmate from Stateville Correctional Center who had been retaliated against by prison officials. The state agreed to a favorable settlement following a courtordered settlement conference. mINNEAPoLIS Jarod Bona has been representing an inmate before the United States Court of appeals for the Eighth Circuit in his claim that he was improperly denied the right to file a petition for habeas corpus. SACRAmENTo & LAS vEGAS Peter Leal and Joanna Kishner are representing a guatemalan youth in a case referred by the National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children (NCRIC) in his quest to remain in the United States and permanently escape sexual violence and persecution by local gangs. SAN fRANCISCo hilary Roxburgh is assisting the Community Coalition for Substance abuse Treatment & Prevention (COCO) with its purchase of a new facility from the City of Los angeles. EAST PALo ALTo hope Case is providing labor and employment counseling and litigation defense to Swords to Plowshares, one of the country’s premier veterans’ support organizations. LoS ANGELES Michael Lebovitz and Cory Stigile assisted an african documentary filmmaker in establishing a friends organization in the United States to assist in his fundraising efforts. SAN DIEGo In a case referred by Casa Cornelia, Brooke Killian is working to obtain asylum for a transgender youth who faces persecution and violence based upon his gender identity if he is forced to return to his home country. PHoENIx The University of Iowa College of Law profiled David Pendergast on its alumni website, highlighting his numerous pro bono contributions, including his work on a team that is representing one of the Jena Six defendants in Louisiana, as well as his work on the World Bank, Doing Business project (see page 15). AUSTIN Meghan Paulk Ingle volunteered as the editor of a paper commissioned by the Levi Straus Foundation (in partnership with the appleseed Foundation) on challenges faced by garment industry workers in Mexico. Meghan took the academic paper and transformed it into a user-friendly document that could be used to create an action plan for reforms in the garment industry. DALLAS Suneese haywood Eagleton recently took over as general Counsel to the North Texas Food Bank, with whom the firm has had a pro bono relationship for several years. The Food Bank provides 50 million meals annually to individuals in 13 North Texas counties. HoUSToN Ileana Blanco was recognized by Texas Lawyer Magazine in July 2008 for representing a terminally ill woman in a custody dispute and helping reunite her with her five-yearold son before she passed away. 16 | PRO BONO BULLETIN
