PROBONO Bulletin - Winter 2008 - (Page 17) BoSToN Client D.W. is an african-american, who, while a 16-year-old freshman at a private college in Massachusetts, awoke one morning to find racial threats and slurs written on her dormitory room walls and door. after police identified the men involved in the incident, Michael Vhay and Eileen Potts brought civil rights and tort claims against them, eventually helping the client reach a favorable settlement. NEW yoRK Micah McOwen successfully represented a woman who was coerced into signing a stipulated child support agreement for less than half of the statutory minimum. after numerous court hearings, he was successful in more than doubling the child support amount and then in having the exhusband’s multiple appeals dismissed with prejudice. PHILADELPHIA Tina Karkera represented a domestic violence victim seeking to obtain custody of her two-year-old daughter. BALTImoRE Devorah Lewin assisted the Corporation for healthy homes and Economic Development (ChhED), a nonprofit that provides affordable housing to low-income families on Maryland’s eastern shore, with its acquisition and financing of land in Wicomico County, Maryland. WASHINGToN, DC Lucinda Bach and David Clark (both Washington, DC) helped their client, Ms. M., obtain full custody of a seven year-old boy, who she had raised from infancy. In January of last year, Ms. M. filed an action for legal custody of the child. In response, the birth mother took the child out of school, placed him with his grandmother, and refused to let him see or speak to Ms. M., who was the only mother the child had ever known. The team argued and won a motion for temporary custody so that the child could return home and, after a full hearing, Ms. M. won permanent custody. NoRTHERN vIRGINIA Lawyers continue to help immigrant victims of domestic violence through Pathways to Freedom, the office’s signature project. Lisa Norton recently filed an application on behalf of her client, and Jackie guberman’s client received the first level of approval. Lawyers in the office have represented 10 clients thus far. RALEIGH On Election Day, attorneys in our Raleigh office stepped up at the last minute to help the National Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights by hosting an Election Protection Command Center for Eastern North Carolina. Carrie hartley, Laura Sirianni and Katrina Reck led the effort, training volunteers and organizing field operations for six counties in the state. ATLANTA The office hosted Lawyer for a Day, in which 15 boys from a charter middle school heard firsthand from our professionals and staff the importance of hard work, discipline, focus and surrounding one’s self with positive people. anthony Webb and a large team of lawyers and staff spearheaded the event, which was organized in conjunction with a local nonprofit, Boys Speak Out, Inc. TAmPA Doug Knox and Lew Conwell represented Mr. C. in prosecuting his claim against a correctional officer in Walton County, Florida. Mr. C. alleged that the defendant, an officer with the Walton County jail, was deliberately indifferent to his serious medical needs. Doug and Lew successfully opposed the Defendant’s Motion for Summary Judgment. The case settled on terms favorable to our client on the eve of trial. WINTER 2008 | 17
