PROBONO Bulletin - Winter 2008 - (Page 18) NATIoNAL NEWS Representing the Susan G. Komen foundation for the Cure B est known for sponsoring the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series, Komen for the Cure raises funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. The organization has 125 Affiliates across the United States and abroad. Alan Greenfield (Chicago) served on the Board of Directors of the South Florida Affiliate of Komen for the Cure prior to relocating to Chicago in 2006. Shortly after joining DLA Piper, Alan contacted Susan G. Komen for the Cure with the idea of establishing a pro bono relationship between DLA Piper and the organization. “I did this for my mother. Since she was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer during my second year of law school, I’ve tried to do what I can to help in the fight against this disease,” Alan says. “I knew the South Florida Affiliate wasn’t alone in needing legal assistance. I wanted to see if we could provide similar services to all Komen for the Cure Affiliates.” Earlier this year, Alan, Anne Geraghty (Chicago), Lisa Dewey (Washington, DC), Kathy Owen and Doug Sweet (Dallas) met with the organization’s legal department in Dallas. “From the moment we all sat down, it was clear that everyone shared a common goal and vision: to make first-class legal services available free of charge to all Komen for the Cure Affiliates,” Anne says. Following that meeting, the firm commenced a pilot program through which we now serve as outside general counsel to seven Komen for the Cure Affiliates; Atlanta, Chicagoland Area, Florida Suncoast, Maryland, Northeast Ohio, Orange County and San Francisco. The firm also provides legal services to the organization’s national headquarters. “It is a good feeling to be able to work with individuals so dedicated to helping others and finding a cure for breast cancer,” David Hall (Tampa) says. “Within the nonprofit world, keeping operating costs low and the organization safe always remains critical to our mission,” says Michael Ziener, Executive Director of the Chicagoland Area Affiliate. “To be able to reach Highlights of Legal Services Provided to Local Affiliates So Far ATLANTA—Michael Rubinger is providing outside general counsel support to the greater atlanta affiliate.
