PROBONO Bulletin - Winter 2008 - (Page 21) NATIoNAL NEWS Election Protection Update Volunteers take calls from the call center in Philadelphia on election day. On Election Day, more than 225 DLa Piper lawyers, paralegals, secretaries and staff from across the country assisted the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law with its nationwide Election Protection effort. Election Protection is a national non-partisan coalition designed to ensure that all eligible american citizens have the opportunity to cast a vote and have it counted. On November 4th, DLa Piper volunteers in austin, Chicago, Dallas, Northern Virginia, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Raleigh, San Diego, Seattle and Washington, DC, operated and staffed almost 200 phone lines plugged into Election Protection’s 1-866-OUR-VOTE hotline—a resource for voters who have questions about or wish to report problems with the voting process—oversaw a vast mobile field volunteer program, and provided on-line advice to voters with questions about their rights. Our Washington, DC, office served as the national command center for the Election Protection program. Nationwide, volunteers in the firm’s call centers answered nearly 5,000 calls from voters on Election Day, and firm lawyers have devoted almost 5,000 hours to the project this year! In New York, we also participated in election protection work on behalf of the asian american Legal Defense and Education Fund and the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund. although there were too many election-day volunteers to list, grace Poe, Kate Marzo, anne geraghty, Laura Collier, Naomi Miali and Pamela Upsher led the effort in Chicago; John McKeever and Jackie Dungee led the effort in Philadelphia; Mary gately, Roberta Ritvo and Constance Webb led the effort in Washington, DC; anthony ashton led the effort in Baltimore; Sean Cunningham, Matt Schwartz, Erin Penning and James garrett led the effort in San Diego; and Carrie hartley, Laura Sirianni and Katrina Reck led the effort in Raleigh. In addition, Ezell Johnson led a national team of IT professionals who set up phone lines and computers for all of our volunteers on election day. IT volunteers included Jim Donnelly, Phil Evans, Luanda herder, Sanjay Kaul, Cathy Keleghan, Logan LeeMasci, Kevin Sparenberg, Deborah Thompson, Ian Tuason and Dave Zimmerman.
