REmARKS of fRANK BURCH aT EMPOWERINg STUDENTS aND FaMILIES LaUNCh “ When I started in 1974 as an associate at what was then Piper & Marbury, we had a branch office on Wolfe Street near Johns hopkins hospital, and it was the first pro bono legal clinic sponsored and funded by any large business law firm in the country. First year associates spent a day a week working out of the clinic. Clients would walk in the door and present their very real life problems. We all learned a lot about things we never would have learned about otherwise: domestic relations, custody fights, Social Security appeals, criminal matters, community matters, real estate matters; you name it. What a great experience it was. “Pro bono has evolved quite a bit over the years as the firm has evolved to focus on things where there is high-impact potential. and, [in developing our signature project in Baltimore] when we looked at the issues in this community, two jump right out at you: crime and public education The idea was to come up with something where you’ve got a model in place that shows evidence that it will work if it has the support of firms like ours and clients and others in the community “So we’re really enthusiastic about this project and we’re going to stick with this for the long term. We are going to make a very significant commitment both in terms of time and other resources I know we can count on all of you for your support and we’ll have lots of good success stories to share.” —Frank Burch Empowering Students and Families launched at an event in early August. Frank Burch, Joint CEO; Paul Tiburzi, Baltimore Managing Partner and Ray Earnest, Managing Attorney of the Signature Project all spoke at the event. Executive Director of the BFA Foundation, Khalilah Harris, and two of her students also addressed the crowd. WINTER 2008 | 05
