Counseling Points - January 2009 - (Page 3) welcome Dear Colleague, Welcome to the second issue of Counseling PointsTM, Caring for Individuals with ADHD Throughout the Lifespan, an official publication of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP). In this issue, three experts review pharmacologic treatment options for children, adolescents, and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The experts also briefly address medications to treat psychiatric co-morbidities that may accompany ADHD. In our next issue of this series, we will review nonpharmacologic treatments, including psychotherapies and behavioral strategies. Multiple studies have demonstrated that a combination of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic modalities provide the most optimal clinical outcome for individuals with ADHD. APNA and NAPNAP are both committed to the integration of evidence into nursing practice education. This educational program will incorporate the best available evidence in an explicit fashion. Evidence may include research, integrative reviews, practice guidelines, quality improvement data, and case studies. We would like to thank McNeil Pediatrics, Division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., administered by Ortho-McNeil Janssen Scientific Affairs, LLC, for sponsoring this publication under an educational grant. When there is commercial support for an educational activity, the role of the commercial supporter is to facilitate conduct of the activity by providing funding to support the activity.
