Counseling Points - March 2008 - (Page 3) welcome Dear Colleague, Welcome to the second issue of Infusion Nurse Counseling Points™, an official publication of the Infusion Nurses Society (INS). In this edition, we provide a look at both the pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic, systemic, inflammatory, destructive disorder that is associated with significant mortality, functional disability, and economic burden. Many of the treatments reviewed have been found in research trials to improve functional status and quality of life for patients with RA and some, most notably the disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs that we as infusion nurses are most familiar with, have been shown to actually stop or slow the progression of RA. INS is a membership organization representing the specialty practice of infusion nurses. INS fosters excellence in the domains of education, policy, practice, research, and organizational development, and influences these domains through developing and disseminating standards of practice, providing professional development opportunities and quality education, advancing best practice through evidence-based research, supporting professional certification, and advocating for the public. If you find this publication useful, I hope you will consider joining INS if you are not already a member. In doing so, you will be joining a premier group of nurses who are dedicated to advancing the delivery of quality therapies to enhance the health and well-being of patients. To learn more, please visit our website at www.ins1.org (where you can find a digital copy of this publication and take the posttest online). Finally, we would like to thank Roche for supporting this continuing education activity through an unrestricted educational grant. Sincerely, Kathleen Walther, RN, BSN, CRNI® Education Manager Infusion Nurses Society 3 MARCH 2008 http://www.ins1.org
