Counseling Points™ Enhancing Patient Care and Providing Caregiver Support Continuing Education Information Target Audience This educational activity is designed to meet the needs of nurses working with patients with confirmed opioid addictions, as well as other nurses who may have contact with individuals at risk for opioid misuse or dependence. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to: • Assess patients for opioid dependency and recognize those who may be at risk of developing a dependency • Explain the pharmacology and side effects of methadone and buprenorphine • Educate the patient about how to prepare for and what to expect from induction therapy • Know the steps to conducting the required medical visits during induction • Understand the role of counseling in medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction Continuing Education Credit This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Wisconsin Nurses Association Education Approval Program committee, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This activity has been approved for 1 contact hour. This program expires October 1, 2009.
