welcome Dear Colleague, Welcome to Counseling Points™, an official publication of the International Nurses Society on Addictions (IntNSA).This publication has been made possible thanks to an unrestricted educational grant from Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals Inc. The strength of Counseling Points™ lies in its ability to deliver the most current and authoritative “best practice” information directly to care providers of patients with mental health and psychiatric issues. In this special issue on addiction, we look at new ways to combat a growing medical concern by providing better treatments for more patients afflicted with opioid dependencies. IntNSA is a professional specialty organization founded in 1975 for nurses committed to the prevention, intervention, treatment, and management of addictive disorders including alcohol and other drug dependencies. IntNSA is dedicated to advancing excellence in addictions nursing practice through advocacy, collaboration, education, research, and policy development via its affiliations with the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the Nursing Organizations Alliance (NOA), and through its many educational forums and programs. This Counseling Points™ publication is yet another IntNSA tool to help nurses provide comprehensive, high-quality nursing care for addicted patients and their families. I am excited that, in light of the current national attention on the disease of addiction, the partnership efforts between IntNSA and the Delaware Media Group have resulted in an educational collaboration with Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals Inc. My colleagues and I have worked to put together an issue of Counseling Points™ that addresses the most significant medical and psychological issues we, as nurses, face daily with our patients struggling with dependencies. The treatment of addiction is now on the brink of a far greater reach, and of providing the opportunity for recovery to so many more individuals. In this publication, we share the most current thinking and up-to-date practice methodologies to help all practitioners make use of this new concept in their setting. I hope you find it useful.
