Initiated and led by Jane Chmielinski, formerly DMJM Harris’s president and CEO, who currently serves as chair of DMJM Harris and leads AECOM’s Corporate Development Group, WDF’s purpose is to create an environment within the organization that attracts and cultivates the most talented and effective women leaders at every level and in every discipline. “As part of the AECOM family of leading engineering design firms, we have an obligation to be a catalyst for change within the industry, and to provide real opportunities for career growth and succession planning,” says Chmielinski. “Taking the time to develop our women leaders of tomorrow is not just a smart business decision, it’s the right thing to do.” With the help of Liz Levin, an established leader in organizational excellence with a special knowledge of the transportation industry, the inaugural WDF event brought together more than 50 women from the three companies. Attendees of the three-day workshop not only examined and discussed individual, organizational and industry obstacles, but developed a vision and action plans for addressing these business issues. “The WDF will initiate a positive change for our employees and our clients—women and men— and will also provide a strong foundation within AECOM for diversity at all levels and disciplines,” says Laurie Gutshaw, director of corporate communications. Gutshaw and Chmielinski, along with Darcy Immerman, director of business development for DMJM Harris Energy and Power Services, are part of the WDF Executive Committee. Today, in offices across the country, the inaugural group from WDF is working to make a real change as they carry forth on the objectives determined at the October 2007 workshop—including the expansion of WDF within the organization. “The first WDF event was a success and I’m proud of the steps we’re taking to promote diversity in all aspects within our company and our industry,” says Fred Werner, chief group executive of AECOM’s US Infrastructure Group. “It is a great beginning to what I predict will be a valuable initiative that extends into the rest of AECOM.” L Legacy—VOLUME 3: NUMBER 2, 2008 11
