Legacy - Volume 3, Number 2 - (Page 12) Feature Article On the move in the Southeast Stimulating regional development F rom Atlanta to Jacksonville to New Orleans, the Southeast is home to a wideranging assortment of transportation projects. Many of the most significant of these projects are being planned, designed or managed by DMJM Aviation and DMJM Harris. >> (From left to right): Bob Wichmann, Mark Holder, John Cordner, Youlinda Kenny and Gus King, part of the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s redevelopment team. >> Here’s just a sample of how the two firms are working to improve transportation in the Southeast from roads and runways to rails and bridges. Bridging the parishes As part of Louisiana’s commitment to becoming more competitive in nationwide commerce by investing in its infrastructure, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LDOTD) established the $2-billion Transportation Infrastructure for Economic Development program. Even with the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the LDOTD maintained its commitment and continued with its mission through an investment in transportation projects. DMJM Harris is responsible for designing one 12 Legacy—VOLUME 3: NUMBER 2, 2008 of the program’s key projects, the $250-million Florida Avenue Bridge. Spanning New Orleans’ Inner Harbor Navigational Channel, the bridge incorporates an impressive 1,516-foot-long steel and segmental superstructure and more than 10,000 feet of elevated viaducts and ramps. Scheduled to open in 2011, the bridge will be the canal’s first fixed-span crossing, providing uninterrupted access between St. Bernard and Orleans parishes. This project—which will help stimulate New Orleans’ economy—also helped sustain the two local offices and its employees in difficult times. “Many of our own employees in New Orleans were affected by Katrina, so not only are these projects essential for the state’s economic development but they’re also important to our staff and their local communities,” says Bijan Pashanamaei, P vice president and project manager. .E., Designing a multimodal facility In Jacksonville, Florida, DMJM Harris is helping transform the historic Jacksonville Union Terminal—circa 1919—by converting it, and the surrounding area, into a transportation haven. The multimodal Jacksonville Transportation Center will include a bus terminal and offices for the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA), a Greyhound Terminal, a people-mover station, two bus rapid transit stations, an Amtrak terminal, two park-and-ride facilities, retail establishments and a transportation management center.
