In most cases, we have even found that their grades have improved.” Supporting the next generation For the younger engineers in the industry, mentorship and support are essential for helping them grow to their full potential, including support for the work they do on their own time. “Growing up in my native Mexico, water came in pails, not pipes,” says DMJM Harris structural engineer Yurintzy Estrada. “My history sparked my desire to become an engineer. I hope through my actions, I can help people in other parts of the world.” Estrada is putting this expertise to use in Engi- neers Without Borders (EWB)—a nonprofit organization consisting of university and professional chapters that partner with third world nations to improve their quality of life. While studying at the City College of New York, Estrada helped form the New York student chapter that traveled to Honduras to install a water system for 375 people, a project completed in January 2007. Following graduation, Estrada joined the New York City professional chapter and is now heading a group working on a water system project in Kenya. DMJM Harris, long a supporter of EWB, donated funds to help to finance the Kenyan project. For Estrada, the experience is not only fulfilling her goal to help others—it is also helping to shape her professional career. “Engineers Without Borders has given me management experience that I couldn’t get anywhere else—not even through interning or in school,” says Estrada. “Working on these projects has instilled me with a lot of confidence in my abilities.” “The dedication shown by Yurintzy, Ray, Frank and Rebecca is just the tip of the iceberg,” says Wolsfeld. “There are many, many committed professionals throughout CTE, DMJM Harris and DMJM Aviation who are working hard to encourage the next generation. I’m exceedingly proud of all of them—and I know the future of the profession is in good hands.” L Legacy—VOLUME 3: NUMBER 2, 2008 17
