Walneck's Classic Cycle Trader - June 2008 - (Page 14) SPECIAL FEATURE STORIES 30 YEARS IN REVIEW 30 Years In Review Part 2 of 3 By Buzz Walneck ast month I gave a rundown on how this magazine began. The big newspaper format which was to continue to about 1983, when around issue #34, we went to a standard magazine size and even added a color to the cover. Page count was up to 56. We stayed relatively unchanged till 1989, when we went with a 4-color cover, and changed our name a little to “Walneck’s Old Time Cycles.” That proved to be confusing, as to just how old, is old? We went with “Walneck’s Classic Cycle Trader” which was the best way to go. A smaller, specialty magazine distributor found our magazine on a rack, and asked if they could handle it for us. Pixie told me that they could order up to 750-copies per month, but no more as that would represent a large expense for us. When I had the meeting with Harvey and Steven, they said they wanted 1,500 to begin with, and would front us the money, so we would not have to pay for the magazines out of our pocket! They were nice, honest people and we worked together many years. By 1986, we were at issue #41, and had gone to a glossy four-color cover. It was beginning to look pretty good! The glossy cover got to be too expensive, and we went back to newsprint till about issue #62. It ran that way for a while, but we switched back to glossy once again. Fast forward to 1992 and our 100th issue! That was the staff, in our back yard. Florence (mom) Walneck, me, Pixie, our son Ed and 14 JUNE L Helen (Ed’s Godmother) who helped out part time. This was a 104-page issue. I don’t recall if the “wild” cover for our 125th issue helped sell copies or not, but we were willing to try new ideas. That was 1994. Within the next two years we plugged along, then in 1996 we met with the people at Trader Publishing Co. I’ll bring you up to date with the next chapter of “30-YEARS IN REVIEW”.
