Walneck's Classic Cycle Trader - June 2008 - (Page 26) SPECIAL FEATURE STORIES J. WOOD SHOW AND AUCTION A Re-cap by Somer Hooker J. Wood Show and Auction at Deland, Florida Bike Week 2008 Auction inspection always draws a crowd & Walneck’s was there! T his was the 21st J. Wood show and auction. It’s hard to believe that this show has come this far. In 1987 Jerry Wood held an auction with 40 bikes in the old National Guard Armory in Daytona (An interesting factoid is that you could have bought Steve McQueen’s Vincent there!) The sale kept growing, and soon Jerry added a swap meet. The Armory instantly filled up. The Armory soon became “ground zero” for the vintage motorcycle set. Although the show grew, unfortunately, the city did not want to deal with Armory rental. Jerry went packing and worked a deal with Stetson University in Deland, Fla. Deland is only 20 miles west of Daytona. With the large gymnasium and the fenced area around it, it was an ideal area for a swap meet and auction. Here they had both indoor and JUNE outdoor spots as well as convenient motels and parking. This year found the swap meet completely full. Many of the old vendors were there and some new ones too. There was always lots of foot traffic. Anything from scooters with sidecars to large porcelain signs was on offer. Vendors from the US and Canada were there. Participants from all over the world were there. Japanese, Australian, German, and Irish accents could be heard. Jerry has always stated that this was an auction by motorcyclists for motorcyclists. In the same vein, this is a meet for motorcycle enthusiasts. Each day on the outside different clubs staged shows. The VJMC put on an excellent show that had people pointing and remembering some of their 1st “rides”. 26 2008 I WALNECK’S CLASSIC CYCLE TRADER® I WALNECKS.COM http://WALNECKS.COM
