Walneck's Classic Cycle Trader - July 2008 - (Page 20) MONTHLY FEATURES TIP OF THE MONTH Primary Overhaul Part 2: New Parts Solve Problems By Mike Brown In our last installment you may recall we stripped a Triumph primary drive to discover and remedy excessive free play in the clutch assembly. To find the culprit(s) we needed to do a little precision measurement because just eyeballinʼ the parts didnʼt reveal anything obvious. As it turned out, most of the wear was in the inner clutch hub and the 20 roller bearings. We measured each bearing, all were worn a couple thousandths at least and even more wear was found in the hub. The basket itself was barely worn at all. While all the measuring was taking place, the primary cover soaked in a shallow pool of lacquer thinner. Doing so for about half an hour makes the gasket come off quicker than a stripperʼs skirt because the thinner dissolves the old cement and softens gasket material into mush. This process makes the use of a lot of scraping force unnecessary and prevents damresults in an annoying leak.
