Walneck's Classic Cycle Trader - July 2008 - (Page 22) MONTHLY FEATURES mary case and began assembly of the drive components. The bearings in this sort of Brit clutch can be installed on the bench into the clutch basket and inner hub and then the outer hub installed. At this point the parts can be installed on the transmission shaft as a unit. Alternately, the inner hub can be placed on the transmission shaft and then the basket and the bearings installed while the assembly is in the primary case. Either way, when installing the clutch assembly or basket you also install the front sprocket and chain together because the primary chain is a continuous unit, unlike your drive chain that has a master link allowing it to be taken apart. We also included a new thrust washer and primary chain. Now itʼs time to reinstall the alternator and rotor, but check the rotor and stator before TIP OF THE MONTH doing so. Lucas rotors suffer from two common maladies worth checking out when itʼs this convenient. First check the pressed in center of the rotor. These get loose over time and can make a weird clunking sound or let go completely. If yours is loose, youʼll need a new rotor. Also, check the magnetism of the rotor by doing the old toolbox test. Just place each magnet insert against a steel surface and let go. If the rotor holds its own weight on each section, itʼs OK. Make sure to use a new tab washer on the rotor nut, and if reusing the clutch nut use a bit of Locktite on the threads. Tightening both of these high-torque nuts will require locking the clutch and then placing the transmission in high gear. While you can tighten the nuts sitting on the cycle and holding the brake, itʼs a bunch easier to have a friendʼs help. Either way the bike must be kept from moving so that the nuts New primary chain is installed. 22 JULY 2008 I WALNECK’S CLASSIC CYCLE TRADER® I WALNECKS.COM http://WALNECKS.COM
