Walneck's Classic Cycle Trader - February 2009 - (Page 104) MONTHLY FEATURES BENCH RACING located in front of the engine on a bracket on the frame tubes. The seal had swelled from heat or the wrong brake fluid. [Bought bike used] It at least was not sealing and let moisture in. Here is what I did, rebuilt master cylinder, replaced brake line to caliper, rebuilt caliper, replaced pads w/oem pads. New rotor. Using silicon dot 5 brake fld. Here is my problem. I am sure there is no air in the system but I have no pedal. If I ride the bike and drag the rear brake I get pedal and I can ride. If I stop for breakfast, when I come out I have no pedal. I suppose I will buy a new complete master cylinder with the reservoir as part of the master cylinder. What would you advise? Thanks for your input. Bench Racing #107 February 2009 Better late than never Last issue reader Chris Arp wrote in with a question about upgrading his Yamaha Venture Royale’s stator. The electrons had barely made it from my PC to Walneck’s world head quarters when I received a press release concerning, what else? A high output stator for Yamaha Ventures. Available through Rick’s Motorsport Electric’s inc, the replacement stator pumps out 480 watts of power, about 45% more than a stocker, (and 100% percent more than a blown one) and retails for $160.00. Rick’s can be reached at (800) 521-0277 or through the magic of the internet at HYPERLINK "http://www.ricksmotorsportelectri cs.com" www.ricksmotorsportelectrics.com . Starter Symptoms Presents By: Mark Zimmerman looks like a long winter project. Matty Novi, Michigan Via e-mail From your brief description of the problem I’d say you’re probably right on the money and that your starter clutch has indeed gone kaput. But take heart, from what I can see in the parts book it doesn’t look like you’ll need to split the case to affect the needed repairs. Double check that against the service manual, I haven’t even seen any XJ750 since yours came out of its crate, but I’m 99% sure that you can remove the starter motor and all the associated parts without any major surgery. Bench Racing A Augie Via e-mail. Normally I’d advise you not to run DOT 5 brake fluid in a brake system that isn’t designed for it, and /or not to stop for breakfast. But I happen to know, cause I saw it in the subject bar when you emailed me that you’re riding a late model HD, meaning that it does have a DOT 5 compatible brake system, and I can guess that the problem will just get worse no matter how many meals you skip. So here’s my advice; first take another look at the master cylinder, my guess is that you’ll see “hen tracks” small lines that crisscross throughout the master cylinder body. These are caused by moisture and create internal leaks, which prevent the master cylinder from building pressure. If you can hone them out and get a half way decent finish to the master cylinder than reassemble it with a new seal A I was just given a 1982 Yamaha XJ750J by a frustrated friend who just couldn't spend any more time on her. She runs great, but only after push starting her. The battery is brand new, and has been load tested, the starter motor spins (it was rebuilt in May, when the problem first occurred) and so, all signs seem to point to the starter clutch. I was hoping you could give me anything else to check before I split the cases and delve into what Q Hi Mark, Q Mark, Rear brake began to drag.
