Door County - The Official Visitor Guide 2008 - (Page 16) Creating Memories As someone who has grown up and worked in Door County through most of my teenage and adult years, it’s always interesting to hear about the ways visitors “find” our peninsula. For all of the new visitors that discover our peninsula every year, there’s a large population of people who have been coming up here for decades. Smiling seventy-year-olds have proudly announced they’ve been coming up here since they were small children, telling wonderful stories about swimming in Lake Michigan with their siblings and cousins. Couples celebrating milestone anniversaries will often reminisce about their honeymoons at Peninsula State Park, sharing romantic, genuine stories about looking out on the majestic bluffs from Eagle Tower at dusk. Perhaps my favorite part about all of these stories is how they make me feel. Door County has long been a constant part of my life – so much, in fact, that I moved back right after college because I missed it so immensely. And I’m not alone – almost every local resident that I’ve had a conversation with has alluded to an invisible pull – one that makes you gravitate toward the peninsula, no matter where you might be in your life, geographically or otherwise. So, when I hear our visitors’ Door County stories – how they stumbled upon our beautiful little peninsula, and the traditions they have built into their lives as a result of their discovery – I am proud to live in a place that makes these memories possible. I like knowing that Door County is not only a respite for the people who live here, but also for the people who can only spend a week or a weekend every few months – or every few years. No matter how much time you are able to spend in Door County, there is no shortage of traditions one is able to create on this peninsula. Diverse activities spanning many interests abound. If the outdoors is what your family enjoys, explore the hundreds of miles of trails and unspoiled beauty Door County has to offer, or rent a watercraft for a day, enjoying the view from the other side. If the arts and culture is more your style, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy including nationally known theater, art, music, and museums. There are so many options here – from bringing your family for an unforgettable family reunion to spending a romantic winter weekend here as a newly married couple. But don’t take my word for it. Go out and find those options with the help of this guide, and then create your own memories – ones that will last for more than the length of your stay. After all, my career as a worker in the tourist industry would be significantly duller if I couldn’t hear all of your stories -- so keep them coming.
