Through the city’s four museums, all within walking distance of one another, visitors will gain a greater appreciation of our history as well as our traditional and cutting edge arts community. In addition to reflecting a local feel, the Fairfield Center for Contemporary Art and the Miller Art Museum exhibit a variety of regional and national traveling shows each year, and the Door County Maritime Museum creates and builds an expansive new exhibit every year with a maritime theme. Begin your museum experience by visiting the Door County Historical Museum on the corner of Michigan St. and 4th Ave. Exhibits are beautifully detailed and educational about the history of Door County and its people. Upon entering the Scandinavian style building, visitors are greeted with a spectacular natural history wildlife diorama featuring a life-sized beech tree and native species including over 90 birds, whitetailed deer, badger, fisher, and more. One wing is devoted to the pioneer fire station with restored trucks and firefighting artifacts. The Miller Art Museum, one block east of the Historical Museum, is located within the Door County Library. The Fairfield Center for Contemporary Art, located on the corner of 3rd Avenue and Michigan Street in downtown Sturgeon Bay, opened to the public in 1998 through a generous gift from the estate of William S. Fairfield. The museum is home to a diverse permanent collection which includes works by Henry Moore, Rene Magritte, Fernand Leger, Alberto Giacometti, and Wassily Kandinsky. The museum also houses the b2 Gallery which was designed to be an art laboratory and exhibition resource for aspiring, emerging, and established local artists. The Door County Maritime Museum is located just across the Michigan Street Bridge on Sturgeon Bay’s working waterfront. Founded in 1969, the Museum offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the County’s rich maritime history including shipbuilding, lighthouses, commercial fishing and shipwrecks. Following the great success of their “Pirates!” exhibit during the 2007 season, the Museum will open their new exhibit entitled “Freshwater Fury” in May 2008. This exhibit will shed light on the 1913 storm, which was the most destructive of its kind the Great Lakes ever experienced. Also new in mid-summer 2008 will be daily tours of the 149’ tug John Purves. Open year round. www.dcmm.org.
