Door County 2009 Visitor Guide - (Page 13) Know the Weather Door County has long been know as “Wisconsin’s Airconditioned Peninsula Playground” because of our cool breezes and sunny days but, what makes us so different from the rest of the region? It’s the water. Door County juts out into one of the world’s largest fresh water resources and being surrounded by so much water has a significant effect on our local climate. During the summer months the cool deep water generates a refreshing breeze that eases the summer heat and quickly cools the evening air. Even on our hottest days, there’s a cool spot to be found on or near the water. Our average daily high in July is 78.5°F with an average evening low of 58.6°F at night so bring your swimsuit and your sweatshirt. Ironically, our surrounding waters also make Door County one of the driest regions in the state. The cool air over the bay tends to either trigger the rain before it reaches the peninsula or, deflect the incoming storm system to the south of us. It’s often said that if you don’t like the weather, you only have to wait 5 minutes for it to change. That definitely rings true in Door County. Once the snow falls, it’s the warmth that radiates from the open waters of Lake Michigan that keep our temperatures from dipping below those of northern Illinois. The broad spectrum of interesting plants and flowers in Door County is attributed to our cool summers and our mild winters. You’ll have to check out both to see for yourself!
