Door County 2009 Visitor Guide - (Page 16) Going Off-road Myles Dannhausen, Jr. Mountain biking Door County Though short on mountains, the Door Peninsula has created opportunities for mountain bike enthusiasts to get their fix with several challenging off-road trails. Peninsula State Park offers the toughest and most technical trails on the peninsula. Tucked mostly into the less-explored inner woods of the park, the trails offer good stretches of single-track designed to offer obstacles to keep your focus up as you battle the temptation to go for speed. For those not seeking quite such a challenge, there’s always the option of stepping the tires off the dirt and onto the roads or the Sunset Trail Bike Path to take a sojourn to some of the Park’s breathtaking overlooks. Your odds of catching some wildlife in the midst of your workout are great, and it’s not entirely uncommon to find yourself peddling behind a majestic whitetail deer for a few yards or more. If you left your bike at home, worry not. Nor Door Sport and Cyclery and Edge of Park bike rentals literally operate at the very edge of Peninsula State Park and will outfit you with a great ride. If crowds turn you off, then the nine miles of trails at Newport State Park will fit your bill. The trails are fast, if not overly challenging and technical. Great for those relatively new to the sport, the routes here offer a really nice surface weaving through the hardwood forest and along the edge of Lake Michigan. If you find yourself in the Sturgeon Bay area you’ve got off-road options there as well. Potawatomi State Park features eight miles of trails; D C Bikes on 3rd Avenue is a short ride away and will outfit you with what you need. Potawatomi’s trails are relatively tame and a perfect fit for the casual rider. If you need an off-road fix during your vacation, you won’t have to travel far.
