Door County 2009 Visitor Guide - (Page 4) Planning Your Trip to Door County Location & Geography Door County is situated in the US Midwest/Great Lakes area, surrounded by Lake Michigan to the east and Green Bay to the west. Our more than 300 miles of shoreline, over 30 county and local parks, 10 historic lighthouses, 5 state parks and countless nature preserves and land conservation areas give visitors a variety of options to explore the County. The rugged beauty of our geography is carved out of dolomite limestone. As the westernmost edge of the Niagara Escarpment, we are part of the same bowl-shaped rock formation that contours Niagara Falls. You can view different aspects of these geographic formations up close and personal by visiting Cave Point County Park or Peninsula State Park. Door County consists of 24 towns, one city (Sturgeon Bay), and several islands, the largest of which, Washington Island, is connected to the peninsula with ferry boats that run year round. The combined permanent population is about 29,000; the “locals” are friendly as they are accustomed to the over two million visitors who come to enjoy one of the Midwest’s premier vacation destinations. We ath e r The Door County Peninsula and Washington Island have climates of their own. Being surrounded by water moderates our temperatures year round. It is not unusual for weather radar images to indicate precipitation when the sun is shining. And, after all, even a rainy day in Door County is better than a sunny day anywhere else.
