Make your way through the villages of Door County on any given summer afternoon and you’ll be forgiven if you feel you don’t fit in without one. Fortunately, options abound to buy and rent kayaks and enjoy a tour with experienced guides who ensure a great experience for paddlers of all skill levels. The popularity of kayaking is booming in the County – and why not? There may be no better way to appreciate the beauty of Door County’s shores than a paddle with a view of its beaches, towering bluffs, caves and lighthouses. But there’s more than Green Bay and Lake Michigan to explore. A paddle down the Mink River in Ellison Bay is a fantastic way to take in the sunset and step back from the summer throngs. Should you decide to try it out, rest assured you won’t simply be tossed in a boat and sent on your way. Door County’s kayak guides are trained, experienced, and knowledgeable about the area’s waters, history, and sights, and offer a new way to appreciate the unmatched peninsula environment. Kayak tour operators on the Peninsula and Washington Island offer itineraries geared to varied interests, be it the geology of Cave Point, a yoga and kayak combo, lighthouses, a sunset paddle, or even an outing with the kids. The newest addition to the popularity of paddling comes in the form of an international canoe and kayak race June 20-21 on Washington Island. Organized by international-class kayaker Valerie Fons, the race will circle the Island with chase boats furnished by the Washington Island Ferry. Go to breadandh20.com for more information. Short of extreme weather, you can usually find calm, warm water somewhere in the County in the summer months, yet another great reason to break out your paddling skills in Door County.
