Door County 2009 Visitor Guide - (Page 72) Shopping I f you’re looking for an Anytown, USA shopping experience, don’t bother crossing the bridge. Shopping in Door County is aptly described as a trip back in time to the Main Streets we recall so fondly. Small, independent retailers thrive up and down the coasts. Like what you see and want to know more? Chances are you can ask one of the employees of the store, who’ll either know the creator, or often, is the craftsman himself. Potters, painters, jewelers and furniture artisans toil behind Door County’s storefronts, eager to share their stories and insights with shoppers. In a welcome removal from suburban strip mall development, our stores are often woven into history, housed in old oneroom schoolhouses (Uncle Tom’s), old town halls (Patricia Shoppe, Ecology Sports), and historic cabins (Chief Oshkosh). Shopping here isn’t simply about aesthetics or your conscience, however. While you won’t have to look too hard to find staple vacation gifts, you’ll also be pleasantly surprised to discover the array of world-class products available in every village. So leave the any preconceived notions of shopping behind (the mall, the big box) and embark on a trip back to the America of eclectic, diverse shopping where the personal is still a vital part of the experience. - Myles Dannhausen, Jr. Shop Till You Drop SHOPPING IN DOWNTOWN FISH CREEK © MIKE ROEMER 72 The Official Door County Visitor Guide
