EPHRAIM A strong sense of history is evident in the village, with many of Ephraim’s buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Some of Ephraim’s historic buildings are now operated as museums, and guided walking tours are offered during the summer and early fall months. Additionally, many restaurants, shops and lodgings in Ephraim are housed in lovingly preserved historic buildings. Ephraim has long captured the attention of artists, both as a subject and a place of artistic refuge. Galleries and studios abound in Ephraim. Many painters, potters, weavers and craftspeople have made Ephraim an artist’s destination. A notable building is the Francis Hardy Gallery, housed in a graffiti-covered warehouse on Anderson Dock. Featuring the work of some of Door County’s most prominent artists, the site once served as the disembarkation point for tourists arriving by steamer in the 1890s. Ephraim is a wonderful place to enjoy the water. Sail, swim, parasail, fish or simply stroll the shoreline while taking in a spectacular sunset. For more outdoor activities, visit Peninsula State Park, which lines Ephraim’s southern boundary. The 3,700+ acre park offers a golf course, lighthouse, trails, beach, observation tower and camping. A highlight of Door County’s festival scene, Ephraim’s annual Fyr Bal Festival is held the weekend before the summer solstice in June. The village’s Scandinavian heritage is proudly displayed. The day closes with the crowning of the annual Fyr Bal Chieftain, who is honored in a colorful evening ceremony. Entertainment and food fill the downtown area, and bonfires line the shores of Eagle Harbor at dusk to “burn the winter witch” and welcome the long, sunny days of summer.
