A cornerstone of Downtown that emanates Tucson’s distinctive charm, Old Town Artisans is pushing 160 years-old, and is comprised of seven primo shops and galleries that provide unmatched gifts for people of all ages. The retail includes Dawn Stewart Contemporary Jewelers, Muchas Cosas, Old Town Pot Shop, El Presidio Gallery, Tangaroa, Tolteca Tlacuilo, and La Zia. Open Monday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Along with the eclectic shops is La Cocina Restaurant & Cantina, which features a menu of reasonably priced Mexican and American fare. Lunch is served seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Cantina is open for happy hour six days a week, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Old Town Artisans also hosts live music in its intimate courtyard on a frequent basis, with local and touring acts. 272 E. Congress St., 628-2991, Over a year ago, Preen proprietors Emilie Marchand and Erin Bradley had begun seriously searching for retail space to open their vintage clothing and accessory shop, but they had a difficult time finding a good match. The gals needed a place that suited their vision and their wallet. It wasn’t until this summer a match was found, on Congress Street. “We took a leap of faith and decided to do it,” said Marchand. The ladies painted and decorated and turned the old storefront into a stylish boutique with unique fashions, shoes and accessories for the discerning shopper, both female and male. Merchandise also includes local designers’ jewelry and clothing, along with CDs by local musicians. The ladies are also seamstresses, and are happy to make alterations at affordable prices. Visit their website for information about their weekend events. Open Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. colonial frontiers hotel congress calendars santa theresa tile works PLAZA NEWS & GIFTS 33 N. The bad news is this is as typical Southwest turista as it gets. The good news is it’s perfect within that realm, thus making it the place to shop for all your out-of-town relatives, parents and ex-girlfriends/boyfriends you’re still on good terms with. For $19.99 you can find some really nice long-sleeved fleece pullovers with the requisite saguaros. For less you can choose from scores of different t-shirts including lots of choices for little kids. (They carry my personal fave, the pro-Native American Homeland Security, Fighting Terrorism since 1492.) There are dozens of hats, embroidered suede bags, dreamcatchers, small stuffed animals and almost all things kokopelli and cactus, including an elaborately designed plastic saguaro golf tee. (I will in fact be sending this to my dad in Florida). And can anyone say turquoise and prickly pear jelly? The best part about Indian Village is that having moved from Congress St., it now sits in La Placita Village (no longer Tucson’s best-kept secret), directly behind where the screen sets up for the free Thursday night movies. This may not be high art, but with r. Carlos Nakai in the background, it’s a clean and well-kept store continuing to serve a useful purpose.
