Downtown Tucsonan - December 2007 - (Page 12) downtow n SILVER SEA 137 E. Congress St., 624-9954. Lizzie Mead has always loved jewelry - a love that grew into a business selling a wide assortment of products and styles over the last 14 years. Her pieces include the elegance and class of reasonably-priced diamond rings and necklaces to silver rings adorned with large stones to the thick and clunky bracelets and rings made with medical grade steel. “I have unusual stuff that is affordable,” Mead said. “The trendy stuff is way below the prices of the mall. I also have a lot of stuff you won’t find in the mall.” Beyond the jewelry, Mead’s shelves are stocked with figurines, Egyptian statuary, skulls, incense, aromatherapy oils, sea shell gel candles and Art Nouveau replicas. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. bohemia desert bloom BOHEMIA ARTIST EMPORIUM 299 S. Park Ave., 882-0800. Bohemia, another locally-owned Tucson treasure, is located in The Lost Barrio, just south of Broadway on the east side of Park Ave. Upon entering Bohemia (which sits adjacent to a small cafe called Tooley’s which serves breakfast and lunch) you will find yourself greeted by a lovely outdoor ironworks garden, the prefect setting for what lies within. The large, open, warehouse-style space is packed with art, gifts, housewares, clothing, skin and body products, cards, handbags, luggage (you name it!) created by a vast selection of more than 200 local and regional artists. The space is very colorful and eclectic and can keep you engaged and entertained for hours. Whether you’re shopping for yourself or for a gift, you’ll be sure to find something to take home at Bohemia. perri jewelers preen THE MUSEUM STORE (Tucson Museum of Art Gift Shop) 140 N. Main St., 624-2333. There is a connotation and imagery behind the term “gift shop” that is not always complimentary. (“Souvenirs available in the gift shop in the lobby…”) Pricey, cheesy, obligatory and afterthought are all words that come to mind. But nothing could be further from the truth at the TMA where the store’s 1,200-square-foot expanse looks and acts as a gallery within a gallery. And it’s a high-class one at that--quiet, peaceful and an altogether different shopping experience. Most significant is that every piece of work, from the pottery and glasswork to the paintings and drawings, fabric, jewelry, metal and more, is the product of over 100 local talented and hardworking artisans. If nothing more, this is a celebration of local art. Browsing through some of the pottery and slumped glass it’s hard not to be wowed by the craftsmanship (and the price!) of some of the high-end pieces. Fortunately there are options for every budget in almost every art form. Aside from the pottery and glass, store highlights include the Christmas ornament section (including the spark plug santas), the batik silks, an extensive wall of cards and a kids section that includes lots of hands-on arts and crafts activities. By the way, the Museum wants you to know they have recently jettisoned the name “gift shop” in favor of The Museum Store. Nice.
