(Warning: writer about to seriously date himself) When I was a kid and color televisions were first hitting the market, Walt Disney would splash an incredible array of colors over the screen through the opening credits of his Sunday night Wonderful World of Disney program. If you had a color TV this was an incredibly lush, vivid and welcome assault onto the senses. This is almost what it’s like to walk into Tom Philabaum’s gallery where the purest of colors, so bright and varied, against pristine white walls, abound. Just being there, in fact, can be an experience both psychedelic and surreal. For 22 years Philabaum has occupied this space, and his name and high-quality glass blowing have been synonymous. He now shares the studio with 75 other artists, all of whom offer top-shelf product. Glasswork ranges from elaborate sculptures, platters and bowls to the more ornate such as perfume bottles, candleholders and even paperweights, all of which double as high end art. The staff is engaging, and knowledgeable about the artists and the process. And if he’s not out running an errand, Tom will be happy to sit and talk shop. Whether you have a lot of money, a little money, or even no money to spend on glass, give yourself the pleasure of a visit to this studio.
