NEW PLANS TO PONDER The Downtown Links Citizens Advisory Committee has some new options for the alignment of the Links roadway to ponder, and got its first look at the January 14 meeting. Partly as a response to requirements imposed by Union Pacific Railroad, the City and HDR Engineering firm have suggested alternate routes that could eliminate some $2 million in costs to stabilize the Steinfeld Warehouse. These options include alignments that would take 6th Street north of its current alignment, west of Stone Avenue, so as to stay clear of the Steinfeld Warehouse and the Citizens Transfer and Storage Warehouse, sparing them, but putting other warehouse buildings in the road’s path. The options would allow for the drainage system to be incorporated more closely with the roadway, would give the City the opportunity to build a wider underpass below the railroad tracks, with landscaping and better pedestrian and bicycle access, and would mean that the City would not have to rebuild the north approach to the Stone Avenue underpass. With the roadway being constructed away from the current 6th Street alignment, 6th Street would not have to be closed during the construction. The prior alignment would have forced the City to “thread the needle” on a narrow path between Steinfeld and Citizens, putting Steinfeld at risk and creating a deep underpass with few amenities, as well as creating an isolated piece of land at the southwest corner of 6th and Stone. Chris Early says she’s eager to get busy with various marketing projects, and has scheduled Executive Committee meetings for February 5 and 19 at 3:30pm. All Downtown merchants are welcome to attend. “We have lots to do, and I can’t wait to get started. We’d love to see even more merchants get active,” said Early. MOCA ON THE PLAZA The Museum of Contemporary Art has new temporary digs, a satellite site at 149 N. Stone Ave., next to the Main Library, called MOCA on The Plaza. A free public opening reception is scheduled for February 2 from 5-6pm The doors officially open with a bi-national and cross-cultural exhibit by noted French artists [Arid Zones/Zones Arides] led by Tucsonbased Swiss artist Olivier Mosset whose work has been displayed in museums all over the world. This exhibit, initially presented in Paris last year, is part of MOCA’s mission to think globally and act locally on contemporary life issues “We’re still looking for a permanent downtown site for the Museum,” says associate director Lissa Gibbs. “In the interim, we’ve moved most all of our spring public programs to the temporary MOCA on The Plaza site. MERCHANTS ADOPT BYLAWS, ELECT LEADERS The Downtown Merchants and Retail Council of the Downtown Tucson Partnership has approved an organizational plan, including bylaws and officers for the coming year. The Council, which had been established in 2006 under the auspices of the Tucson Downtown Alliance, had been operating informally under the leadership of Robert Wadlow, co-owner of Subway Restaurant and Catering on Congress Street. Under the new bylaws, adopted in January, an Executive Committee was established, consisting of those merchants most active over the last several months. Members include Chris Early, Chris’ Café; Judy Michelet, Café a la C’art; Toni Goldbach, El Charro Café; Margo Susco, Hydra Leather & More; Mary Lou Focht, Old Town Artisans; Larry Mathis, Dizzy G’s; Robert Wadlow, Subway; Beth Dell, Beowulf Alley Theatre; and Bob Stamp, The Hotel Arizona. After adopting the bylaws, the merchants elected the following officers: Chris Early, Chair; Judy Michelet, Vice-Chair; Beth Dell, Recording Secretary; and Robert Wadlow, Sergeant at Arms. Robert Wadlow was then reaffirmed as the Merchants Council’s Standing Member representative to the Downtown Tucson Partnership Board of Directors and its Executive Committee. IN PERFECT HARMONY Opportunities for peaceful coexistence and an examination of barriers that stand in the way highlight a two-day multi-dimensional program to promote Arab-Israeli understanding. Sponsored by UAPresents, the Inner Connection, and Intercultural Journeys, the event includes a symposium at Gallagher Theater, February 16-17, and culminates with a multi-media musical concert February 17 at Centennial Hall. Hosted by UA President Robert Shelton, symposium materials will also be used as part of curriculum development for schools throughout Southern Arizona this spring semester.
