Downtown Tucsonan - May 2008 - (Page 27) continued from page 13 DT: From Classical to Jazz. What drew you to jazz? Lo: First there was Big Band. dad had a girlfriend whose son was into Ella Fitzgerald and Manhattan transfer. I thought it was cool how they took solos and put lyrics to them. Freshman year in high school the pianist for Jazz corp broke her hand. I could sight read but I couldn’t figure out how to play what I heard in my head - I didn’t really get it. It took 10 years to get over that hump. I was so used to having it on the page. I went to Jazz camp. Bobby McFerrin was a facilitator. He said, “If you can hear it, you can sing it, if you can sing it, you can play it.” that was the bridge for me. that’s how I teach improvisation now… and it works! DT: You perform frequently in Europe. Is the reception greater overseas? Lo: I’m kind of spoiled. I feel loved wherever I go, but I know what you’re saying. some say, “Europe! Man, that’s where it’s at, they really pay attention.” People in Europe don’t just listen to Jazz…they know what those musicians had for breakfast! they’re very knowledgeable. they love american music. DT: Aside from music, what are some of your favorite things to do in Tucson? Lo: tony, is there anything else? (big laugh) DT: Of course! But seriously, do you have a favorite hang? Lo: I like sitting on my porch, looking at the beautiful saguaro cactus…we have bobcat and the gang of javelina that eat my garbage. there’s so much to do around town, I just don’t have time to do it all. I guess that’s a blessing. I’m so busy with music but tucson supports its artists. there are always great places to view local art, and hear poetry. DT: You’re so involved with music and generally being a leader on the scene. What does that mean to you, the role as leader and how others look up to you? Lo: I’m not sure how I feel about that title but I like people who leave the door open behind them. not only do I leave the door open but I kind of shove people through the door - as if to say, “Hey! what are you doing just sitting there? Get up here! It’s your turn!” Lisa Otey’s Piano Night Series culminates Monday, May 5 at the Z Mansion (288 N. Church Ave.) with the legendary vocalist/pianist Judy Roberts. Tickets are $20.
