Downtown Tucsonan - September 2008 - (Page 10) Downtown Performing Arts Season Preview T H E AT R E Arizona Repertory Theatre www.marketing.uatheatre.org; www.arts.arizona.edu/theatre 520.621.1162 or almost 30 years the arizona Repertory theatre (aRt) has dazzled tucson audiences. the university of arizona calls aRt the “centerpiece” of the school of theatre arts production program. ua students pursuing their Bachelor’s of Fine arts in acting and musical theatre as well as those pursuing a Master of Fine arts in acting constitute the performers in aRt productions. . “People tend to think of a student production as somehow being inferior, but we receive feedback on a regular basis that our productions are as good as or better than what audience members have seen on Broadway,” said Paula newsome, ua school of theatre arts director of Marketing and development. this season aRt collaborates with the arizona theatre company to present the tony awardwinning musical, Company. set in 1970s new York, company is a very witty and humorous examination of marriage, commitment, and friendships. ua school of theatre arts artistic director and professor Brent Gibbs directs Medea, Euripides’ timeless story of a woman scorned and the incredible lengths to which she will go to achieve revenge. the 2008-2009 season includes four other productions including another award-winning musical, a masterpiece by tennessee williams, and of course a shakespearean classic. “we encourage all theatre lovers in tucson to come see for themselves,” said newsome. - sarah Logan f arizona onstage productions presents songs f o r a n e w w o r l d t h r o u g h s e p t e m b e r 7. Arizona Onstage Productions www.ArizonaOnstage.org 520.270.3332, 520.882.6574 edicated to contemporary musical theatre, arizona onstage Productions has earned a bevy of praise from both the press and attendees in its five-year existence. striving for bold and unique presentations, artistic director Kevin Johnson said that “there are so many new composers for the stage that tucson has not yet heard – their work represents major trends and brings exciting, intelligent theatrical concepts to audiences who both appreciate the classics and look forward to the new.” through Johnson’s efforts and vision, the company has been nominated for, and won, Arizona Daily Star Mac awards in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. committed to community outreach, the aoP says on its website, “we work with artistic and performing staff of the university of arizona, Zuzi dance Lab and Basis tucson (a middle and high school). our education outreach involves students and professionals from the tucson community.” In order to foster the enlightenment of future thespians, aoP sets aside 50 discounted $10 tickets per show for students and teachers who may not otherwise be able to afford it. Regular tickets are a reasonable $20-$25. to help cover their production costs, aoP offers seven private box seats per show for $100 which includes: two tickets, early seating, sparkling water on ice, a small array of flowers, a chilled plate of fruit and chocolates, and a poster signed by all cast members. Beowulf Alley Theatre Company www.BeowulfAlley.org 520.882.0555 estled in downtown’s core at 11 s. 6th ave., Beowulf alley theatre company maintains an intimate 95-seat residency in the historic Johnny Gibson Gym Equipment locale. Founded in 2001, the company moved downtown in 2004, and July 2005 saw its introductory season in the new teatro. the organization is “committed to enriching the community and enhancing appreciation of the arts through the production of innovative, invigorating theatre and theatrical education with the highest standards for acting and production.” as a result, they have won numerous nominations and awards for their productions – including recognition from tucson Pima arts council’s Lumies awards, the Tucson Weekly’s Best of tucson awards, and the Arizona Daily Star’s Mac awards.
