Founded in 1986 with a small board of directors and staff, its mission was to be a communitybased activist theater focusing on chicano and immigration issues driven by our proximity to the border. as it has grown, so has the mission which now attempts to reflect the diversity of all of the voices of the southwest. over the years Borderlands has produced a provocative mix of drama and comedy with as few as three and as many as six productions a year. Many of these works were written by emerging Latinos/Latinas, some of them writing and producing their very first productions. Borderlands also strives to connect with the community through a variety of educational programs including acting workshops for youth, open auditions and the Borderlands Playwrights Program. this season Borderlands has three productions scheduled. under the heading of Recreating Stolen Dreams, these plays are Blind Date, A Tucson Pastorela and Our Dad is in Atlantis. written by Max diament, Blind date is described as a story of passions hatching in an intricate labyrinth of chance encounters. Inspired by the literary world of the great argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges— who explored the illusion of time and space and ventured into parallel worlds long before quantum mechanics became fashionable—Blind date works like a puzzle whose pieces come together at the end of the play. It plays at the Zuzi theatre, october 9-19. - Jim Lipson t arizona theatre company presents hair, nov 29 – dec 20.
