Presenting a mixed repertory program in 1987, the preview performance opened to an audience of 900 people. ballet tucson presents the over 20 years later and with a n u t c r a c k e r, d e c e m b e r 1 2 , 1 3 & 1 4 . new name, Ballet tucson continues to receive rave reviews and packs in crowds of 10,000 in a season. consisting of 18 contract dancers, several student apprentices and trainees, Ballet tucson is the resident and only professional company in tucson. Each year newcomers and ballet lovers alike are awed with the classical performance of The Nutcracker. “It is the event for the holiday season, and a fabulous first thing for people to see,” said Mary Beth cabana, Founding artistic director of Ballet tucson. the 2008-2009 opening night Gala features a special performance by international ballet superstars and new York city Ballet principal dancers Maria Kowroski and albert Evans. “For people to get the chance to see Maria on our stage is fantastic, I’m very proud of all of it,” said cabana. this season Ballet tucson also invites you to celebrate your pride of america through the joy of dance at the world premiere of Red white and Blue, an exuberant, patriotic ballet set to the familiar music of John Philip sousa. - sarah Logan B Zuzi! Dance Company www.zuzimoveit.org/ • 520.629.0237 aving celebrated 10 years of existence in early March, Zuzi is stepping (gracefully) into the next phase of the company’s development, that of hiring a managing director for the first time, and it represents a major expansion of marketing efforts within the community and a determination to avoid stagnation – actively seeking new ideas and goals. two new dancers, as well as eight former apprentices who graduated from the Youth program, have been added, and associate director Beth Braun will lead an outreach to elementary schools in tucson, taking certain productions (including last year’s “Seuss”) directly to young students. a highlight of the upcoming season will be the return of the “no Frills” informal forum that is an “open mic” for dancers.
