In order to foster the goal of presenting contemporary compositions, the organization created the commissioners circle, and aFcM patrons readily stepped up to sponsor new work. as a result, tucson is the global leader when it comes to a music society having the most active audience-supported commissioning program. the upcoming schedule brings to audiences lauded national and international musiarizona friends of chamber music presents ning kam, violin, cians with six concerts for the Evening Series, n ove m b e r 1 6 , 2 0 0 9. three dates for Piano and Friends, along with the acclaimed week-long Tucson Winter Chamber Music Festival taking place March 8-15. on wednesday, october 1, the Evening series opens with new York’s trio solisti; concluding the six-concert series on april 22 is sydney’s australian chamber orchestra with that event taking place at Fox theatre, 17 w. congress st. the Piano and Friends sunday matinees include groups from singapore, Belgium, Poland and the czech Republic. the 16th annual music festival features five concerts, with the dress rehearsals and master classes open to the public at no charge. aFcM presents most performances at the intimate, 511-seat Leo Rich theatre, located at 260 s. church ave. in the tucson convention center complex. - Jamie Manser A Fox Theatre www.foxtucsontheatre.org 520.624.1515 he story of the Fox theatre and its long road to renovation is inspiring. For that reason alone it was enough that this impeccably restored movie palace could simply open its doors every now and then, and that people would be wowed by its majesty. aside from a commitment to showing old movies, however, the Fox, which has mostly been used as an infrequent concert rental facility, has not yet been able to articulate a clear vision for itself. with the arrival of its new general manager, Jim williams, who has major experience as a festival and events promoter (you’ve heard of south by southwest), this may be about to change. For the first time since re-opening, the Fox is presenting a season of shows that it is promoting itself. Running from late september through mid december there is an exciting mix of afro-pop (Kanda Bongo Man and toubab Krewe), funk (tower of Power), contemporary Hawaiian (Hapa), flamenco fusion (strunz and Farah) and celtic (teada Irish christmas). williams hopes that by selling subscriptions to a season of shows (with discounts for purchases of multiple shows) the Fox can begin to assume its place as a cultural hub for downtown. there will still be occasional outside fox theatre presents strunz & promoted shows (Gordon farah, october 25. Lightfoot) and locally promoted special events. the latter will include the tucson Musicians Museum night on september 27 featuring several all star local performers including the R. carlos nakai Quartet. - Jim Lipson t 14 downtown tucsonan.september.08 http://www.ArizonaChamberMusic.org http://fa.ml.com/Lori http://fa.ml.com/Lori http://www.foxtucsontheatre.org
