Downtown Tucsonan - September 2008 - (Page 5) D ow n tow n Low d ow n BIEN VENIDOS A TUCSON New city residents along with new students/faculty/staff at the UA and Pima College are invited to a Welcome to Tucson event, 8:30-12:30, September 6, at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 400 East University. There’s a free lunch and free literature on a myriad of subjects from city resources to cultural and recreational events. Historian Jim Turner of the Arizona Historical Society is keynote speaker and will address stories of the old Old Pueblo. A variety of workshops will focus on Tucson’s history, culture, environment, politics and religious landscape, according to Dave Wasserman, co-pastor of Trinity Church, who acknowledges, “An event like this would not have happened without imaginative partnering.” The event is sponsored by Downtown Tucson Partnership, Trinity Presbyterian Church, University of Arizona, Pima Community College, Fourth Avenue Merchants Association, Marshall Foundation, and West University Neighborhood Association. “I’m delighted to see Downtown Tucson Partnership participate in this event,” says Glenn Lyons, CEO. “It’s a great opportunity for new residents in our community to learn about exciting developments taking place downtown.” Call 623.2579 for additional information. (Childcare will be provided if requested). STREETSCRAPE DESIGN FOR SCOTT, CONGRESS UNDERWAY City and Downtown Partnership officials are working with consultants and stakeholders to develop a space plan for the right-of-way along Scott Avenue from 14th St. to Pennington St., and along Congress St. from 5th Ave. west to the Veinte de Agosto Park. The space plan includes sidewalks, landscaping, on-street parking, travel lanes, and room for amenities such as street furniture, planters, public art, and lighting fixtures. The object is to design the new streetscape for Congress, Scott, and Arizona Avenues for construction beginning in November 2008 (on Scott) and Spring 2009 (for Congress). Underground utility work must be completed and then the above-ground improvements will be installed, all designed to get Downtown ready for the Modern Streetcar in 2011, and to create an inviting pedestrian experience along the streets that are the heart of Downtown’s arts and entertainment district. BEAD-A-THON Working in teams, 50 lampworking artisans will work for 24 hours at flaming torches to create one-of-a-kind glass art beads to benefit children coping with cancer and other serious illness. Sonoran Glass Art Academy (633 W. 18th St) is pairing up with Beads of Courage for the “First Annual Beadathon.” Each bead created over the two-day bead making marathon will go directly to children who receive the Beads of Courage Program nationwide. The event takes place on Friday, September 12 and Saturday, September 13. Admission is free. More information can be found at www.sonoranglass.org or by calling 884-7814. BEAUTY TREATMENTS Five buildings on Congress Street, two on 6th Avenue, and one with an East Broadway Boulevard address have been selected for first round funding in the Downtown Façade Improvement Program checks for up to $7,500 in design fees to put prettier faces on buildings built anywhere from 1905 to 1931. Congress; Wig-O-Rama/Grill/Arts Incubator/Vaudeville Cabaret, 98-110 E. Congress; the Rialto Block, 300-320 E. Congress; The Screening Room, 127 E. Congress; the block section running from 256-278 E.
