Sugarmama tom walbank and the ambassadors Mudhouse Records this Brit renders reverence to one of the most vital and influential american musical art forms. not only honing the tunes of blues legends, he makes them his own on stage and on his releases – his current tensong record has nine original tracks. the multi-talented musician commands the guitar and slides along the strings like nobody’s business. the harmonica is ever at his breath’s behest and he is easily one of the top harp players in town. walbank’s voice ties it all together into an ace package of masterful blues. tom howls and growls with unbridled passion on the majority of the tracks, especially pronounced on Six Black Mares. Being a man of depth, walkbank also sings with romantic tenderness on Don’t Ask Why and Rebel of the Heart. the songs he writes and the songs he covers rock with the rhythm of that ancient propagator of life. and the dancing girls in front of the stage won’t let you forget it. Listen online at www.MySpace.com/tomwalbank. Sugarmama is available at Preen, 272 E. Congress St.; 17th St. Farmer’s Market, 840 E. 17th St.; Toxic Ranch Records, 424 E. 6th St.; and Zia Records. Carried to Dust calexico Quarterstick Records the southwestern scene songsters are at again with the release of this lovely, Latino-influenced 15-track disk. Fans of the band will thoroughly enjoy the album, as it maintains their signature sound while showcasing an evolution of musicianship, production and recording. overwhelmingly, the songs are desert romantic that pique the imagination. It makes for super great contemplative music, especially on road trips through arizona – or anywhere else for that matter. Internationally renowned and locally revered, Joey Burns and John convertino know their home base quite well and expertly convey the old Pueblo’s vibe to their global audience. Proving to be dedicated to the folk traditions of the region, perhaps Burns and convertino can collectively be considered the alan Lomax of arid lands. D U B C R AW L a Swank Prelude to Club Crawl By Scott Denton s tucson’s club crawl—a well loved single-night, multi-venue music festival—approaches its sixteenth year this month, live music fans will be introduced to a new event on the preceding night. consider it the arrival of the indie-rock oriented happening’s urban cousin. on Friday, october 10th, duB cRawL, tucson’s first electronic music festival, will ignite five indoor and outdoor stages at Hotel congress, the Rialto theatre, sports on congress, and downtown’s new upscale lounge, centro. the diverse line-up of over twenty artists includes headliners with national and international reputations. new York dJ/producer Frankie Bones is credited with introducing rave culture to the united states. affectionately known as om Records’s “first lady of house,” La-based dJ/singer colette adds her jazzy alto vocal to her live mixes, and is a resident dJ at smart Bar in her hometown of chicago. Freaky Flow is a reigning dJ of north america’s drum’n’bass mecca, toronto. duB cRawL is the brainchild of Phat Entertainment owners corbin dooley, a dJ himself, and Ronnie spece who are also behind centro, formally opening the same night. schedule and ticket information is available at hellaphat.com, rialtotheatre.com, and hotelcongress.com.
