Downtown Tucsonan - November 2008 - (Page 14) Downtown by Scott Denton DEERHOOF, Club Congress, November 12. deerhoof, the mercurial, genre-defying band from san Francisco, returns to club congress after a twenty-month absence from tucson. Founding member Greg saunier (drums), satomi Matsuzaki (bass/ vocals), and guitarists John dieterich and Edward Rodriguez ingeniously weave experimental, neo-progressive, and garage influences into concise, three-minute bursts that resemble pop—albeit off-kilter pop—songs. despite the heady mix of the visceral and the intellectual, deerhoof’s music has become increasingly accessible over its fourteen-year history. with this year’s addition of Rodriguez amplifying the guitar fray, the newly released ninth album, “offend Maggie,” rekindles a rawness that blends the band’s formative no wave aesthetic with chuck Berry. saunier’s explosive drumming—on little more than a kick, snare, and a cymbal or hi-hat— is more voice than rhythm. Matsuzaki’s startlingly high-pitched, child-like vocals, often sung in unison with the guitars, are equally indispensable to deerhoof’s sound and incendiary performances. Experimental dental school and KIt open. Live Three Particularly Notew orthy Shows ten, and evokes places and times with poignant detail. the music ranges from hauntingly sparse to lush arrangements featuring strings and horns. Rousing performances have drawn credible comparisons to springsteen and Leonard cohen. crooked Fingers are touring as a fourpiece in support of the newly released “Forfeit/Fortune”. the band delivered a brief but stunning set opening for neko case—who makes a guest appearance on the new album—at the Rialto in august. don’t miss this opportunity to see them headline. up-and-coming indie/folk/rockers, Port o’Brien open. stefan george performs at d e l e c t a b l e s o n s a t u r d a y, november 8. 17th Street Farmer’s Market 840 E. 17th Street, 792-2588, www.TreasuresHidden.com. MARNIE STERN, Solar Culture, November 16. speaking of up-and-comers, indie guitar virtuoso and rabid deerhoof fan, Marnie stern returns to tucson this month. the new York-based performer’s sophomore album has just been released by Kill Rock stars. Its title, drawn from an alan watts essay is, “this Is It and I am It and You are It and so Is that and He Is It and she Is It and It Is It and that Is that.” the album provides a second helping her exhilarating, dense, up-tempo songs crafted around her frenetic guitar work—featuring Van Halenesque flurries of string-tapping technique—Zach Hill’s (Hella) equally busy and frenzied drumming, and her shrill vocal delivery of stream-of-conscious lyrics that, as she says in a recent Pitchfork interview, are often like pep talks to herself. Her first album generated plenty of excitement last year and her performance at Plush that summer, with band mates Hill and Robbie Moncrieff on guitar, more than fulfilled expectations.
