Downtown Tucsonan - November 2008 - (Page 25) Molehill continued from page 13 tapestry on the walls; some of the guys did the grease monkey work and put in the windows; Kallini and tony Rosano custombuilt the cabinetry inside. “the bus was a blank slate,” Kallini recalls. “I measured all our gear so I could build stuff that could store it all on the road and then be converted into beds. I was going for the idea of duality that they have on ships and submarines. and we all went for the feeling of a turkish opium den on wheels.” speaking of the bus, it served as lodging at what many of the band members (as well as Flam chen’s weir) came up with as their most memorable experience in Molehill’s 10 year history. the event was a Montreal “comedy festival with a street element” called the Just For Laughs festival, and “Flam chen turned us onto it and got us in there,” according to Kuhn. chambers recalls, “we had the Molehill bus and the Flam chen bus parked nose-to-nose. we set up tarps and rugs and alley-picked some furniture; we even had potted plants and a little herb garden.” the two groups camped and performed together every day for two weeks during the festival. It was a highlight oft-evoked. Molehill’s dalzell, though, summed it up this way: “nine times out of ten, my favorite memories are of all the places that we end up as a group, that we wouldn’t end up otherwise. they’re often not the gigs themselves, but just the gathering of communities. when we play our songs, the spirit of the experiences we’ve had creating the music is still there. there’s an absolute timelessness. what century we’re in doesn’t matter.” Molehill orkestrah celebrate their 10th year with a new release, Language of Bones, which features songs that have evolved over years of playing shows. they will perform their brand of international Mediterranean gypsy dance experimental neo-traditional Eastern European dirge music at the official after-Party of the 19th annual all souls Procession indoors at club congress on sunday night, november 9. special guests will include many of the musicians the band has played with over the years, including founding member nervous duane, who’ll be flown in from new orleans for the festivities. the Mission creeps and calle debauche will play on the outdoor stage. all music (indoors and out) starts at 9pm. $5 suggested donation; all proceeds to benefit Many Mouths, one stomach. Like Flam chen, but in a different way, Molehill has been a part of the asP since it went big time in 1998. according to Molehill cellist Mona chambers, the group actually came together around the asP and this year will mark its ten year anniversary. “I first became involved in 1998 as one of many musicians (30 or so) who came together to play dirge music for the procession. after the procession we just kept rehearsing and quickly, the 30 people decreased to about 8. Voi la - Molehill orkestrah was born! “I think this event is so important to Molehill because it is a solid reminder of when we formed as a band, and why. the initial intent was to come together and perform songs for the community - a very old world tradition - in the way that many small villages had the town band: the band played parties, weddings, and funerals. In this sense, Molehill provided the music for an event that was at once a festive celebration as well as a reflection of the difficulties and tribulations posed by life and death.” The Official After Party. once the Grand Finale has run its course, it is customary for those most involved (and anyone else) to celebrate. For many years this gathering was held at the tucson Puppet works. Lately it’s been at club congress. this year, to commemorate its ten year anniversary, Molehill orkestrah will perform at club congress with all proceeds benefiting the asP through MMos. This year’s All Souls Processional will be held Sunday, November 9, gathering at 5 p.m. at Fourth Avenue and University.
