Downtown Tucsonan - January 2009 - (Page 8) F r o m Tu c s o n t o t h e Wo r l d : Wo l f e B o w a r t d e l i ve rs Let t e r’s En d By Lee Gutowski olfe Bowart, a physical theater performer who has earned accolades around the globe, has a new show in the works here in tucson. the premier of the show Letter’s End in the old Pueblo will be a chance for tucsonans to enter a wondrous world of magic and mood, pathos and comedy. If you want to experience this alternate universe you should get onboard for the local performances since immediately after he unveils it here, Bowart will be taking the production to the uK and australia, where he will undertake a 130 show tour. Bowart and his wife, Kerryn negus, have touring down to a science. their company, spoontree Productions, is the couple’s collaborative tour de force, with negus booking shows, doing all the P.R. and serving as road manager. Last year alone, their itinerary had them in australia, Brazil, Greece, Hong Kong and new Zealand. tucson was last treated to live Bowart performances in 2003, when his critically acclaimed LaLaLuna debuted at the Berger Performing arts center. that show told a charming and surreal tale of the moon’s light burning out and the adventures of the moon’s caretaker as he tried to reignite his charge. the artist’s wildly imaginative and diverse productions employ interactive film along with a nimble, acrobatic style of physical comedy and rapid-fire, stream of consciousness storytelling to captivate his audiences. negus calls it “the lean forward factor” – the magic that happens during Bowart’s shows which engages people of any age, “from 6 to 96.” so, what’s the tucson connection for this international team? Bowart answers, “I grew up in tucson but spend most of my time abroad, so when I come back to tucson I am filled with a jumble of sense memories -- the smell in the desert after a rain; the dry, dry heat of summer; the changing light on the catalinas – so it’s a perfect place to develop this piece.” In his tucson rental space-cum-rehearsal studio/prop workshop at wildcat storage on st. Mary’s, Bowart and company have created the Letter’s End set. “we’re really building the show from the ground up here in the desert,” explains Bowart, who regularly taps into tucson’s rich artistic community for nourishment.
