Emerald Coast Growers Catalog - Summer 2008 - (Page 52) Miscanthus, a genus of about 15 species, is a premier ornamental grass—a garden and landscaping favorite. Though the cultivars number in the hundreds, they have a lot in common. M. sinensis is a bunch grass that forms large clumps and does not have rhizomes. The leaves grow upward and then cascade gracefully outward. The cultivars have showy flowers composed of many small spikelets. Extending from the spikelets are needle-like awns, and surrounding the spikelets are many hairs— beige, red, or pink. The foliage may be bronze or gold in the fall and holds up well in wintertime. Great as specimens, borders, screens, hedges, and background plants. Suitable for mass planting and useful as long-lasting decorative arrangements. Spring and fall are both appropriate planting times. Ideal conditions include full sun, bright shade, and fertile soil. They do fine near water—and require ample water in hot, dry conditions.
