Environments for Aging - Fall 2016 - 51 E A T I V E E Meet the winners and finalists in the eighth annual Environments for Aging Remodel/Renovation Competition, focusing on single spaces For the second year in a row, the Remodel/Renovation Competition has focused on the category of "single spaces"-including dining areas, resident rooms, activity zones, courtyards, spas/wellness centers, chapels, theaters, salons, and other resident areas. The nice thing about having something of a catch-all category is that you get to see a lot of variety-yet because the spaces themselves occupy fairly small footprints, you can get a very good idea of exactly what changes were made, and why. This year's entries were literally all over the place (in a good way), and the 10 finalists, especially, offer some really creative efforts to both modernize a space and take better advantage of underused areas. This year's winner, as voted by our panel of judges from SAGE (Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments), is the new wellness center at Plymouth Harbor on Sarasota Bay in Sarasota, Fla., designed by THW Design (Atlanta). The designers transformed a grim basement fitness area into a bright, sleek, and welcoming space that offers much more than standard exercise options. For more on the project in the designer's own words, turn the page. And keep reading to get project insight directly from the other nine finalists (including Readers' Choice winner Aldersgate Retirement Community Town Center in Charlotte, N.C.), as well. We'll honor the 2016 Remodel/Renovation Competition winners at a special awards luncheon during the next EFA Expo & Conference, Feb. 26-March 1, 2017, at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. A special thank you to our jury (listed at left) for taking the time to evaluate this year's entries.-Kristin D. Zeit, Editor-in-Chief About the submissions: The Remodel/Renovation Competition submissions come from across the U.S. and cover a variety of construction costs and project scopes. Every year, a multidisciplinary panel of invited judges from SAGE (Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments) reviews the submissions. The panel includes architects, interior designers, researchers, academics, regulatory experts, and providers. Judges view the submissions according to their areas of expertise, then rate the submissions and provide comments to help clarify the rationale for the rating, before selecting a winner. The top 10 projects are made available to the public for online voting to select the Readers' Choice winner. All project write-ups beginning on page 52 were provided directly by the submitting firms and were not edited for content by the Environments for Aging editorial staff.
