ADVERTORIAL Q&A with Eric Harrmann Senior Associate AG Architecture Describe your business in one sentence. Senior living focused design professionals who believe in designing communities that can best be described as home. In what sector of senior living do you expect to see the most growth in the next few years? Transitional care will continue to see growth. As synergies between hospitals and senior living communities continue to be successful, more providers will be teaming up with local hospitals and medical colleges to offer additional services to seniors as well as members of the community who would prefer to receive care in hospitality-centered communities. How will the design of those spaces change to meet the demands of today's senior consumers? With the number of choices that residents have for transitional care, designers need to think beyond the functional requirements and efficiency of the facility and instead understand the emotional needs of the resident and family members within the community. The institutional accommodations of the healthcare setting need to make way for residential-focused suites with increased amenities that add vibrancy to these environments and elevate the experience. The Grand Lodge at Hillcrest Country Estates, Papillion, Neb. Tricia Shay photography - www.shayphoto.com What are some challenges your firm is facing? How do you overcome those obstacles?  As senior living communities throughout the country continue to age, AG is seeing an increase in campus repositionings. Whether a community is successful and looking to advance their position in the market or struggling in an overly competitive marketplace, there is the constant of an existing population-the need to best accommodate the current residents. We have found success in creating a charrette process where we bring everyone together to discuss, brainstorm and design the basis for how the community can continue to serve their residents while positioning themselves for the future. This process is not about delivering the final design solution. It is an interactive exercise that focuses on building consensus around common goals and programming needs. This is a forum where residents, owners, designers and contractors can analyze and prioritize. During the design process, the team can build on the strengths of the community and deliver a solution that supports its future success. www.agarch.com http://www.agarch.com http://www.agarch.com http://www.shayphoto.com
