in one sentence.
As an architecture and
interior design firm
specializing in environments
for healthcare and senior
living, Studio+ believes that
planning and design are
not driven by space, but
by value in time, cost, staff
efficiency, and the constant
focus on enhancing the
patient experience and health
outcomes.
What do you consider the
biggest misconception
about designing spaces
for seniors?
The biggest misconception is
that there is only one type of
environment for senior living:
institutions that care more for
the body than the soul. Baby
Boomers are driving a new
direction in senior living that
enhances lifestyle choices in
age-integrated communities.
They provide compassionate
care for physical and
mental health, depending
on acuity level; adjust for

different types and levels of
illness and disabilities; and
encourage social and civic
engagement choices based
on the individual's ability to
participate. Skilled nursing,
assisted or independent
living environments also
include space for caregivers,
social workers, family,
friends, and community staff.
In what sector of senior
living do you expect to
see the most growth in
the next few years?
Memory care. The growing
demographics of seniors
with memory care needs
has challenged the senior
living model. This challenge
will become greater as
projections forecast an
Alzheimer patient population
alone of over 11 million
by 2040. The complex
care required for these
patients requires careful
environmental planning in
order to promote better
outcomes of care. Quality
of life suffers as memory

therapies, including art,

are powerful stimulants
for brain health and tools

How will the design of
those spaces change
to meet the demands
of today's senior
consumers?
The consumer is
changing, and senior
living communities are
being redefined from a
place where seniors retire
to a place where seniors

thrive. Senior living design
is redefining senior care to
meet an active lifestyle that
seniors demand. Today's
active senior expects
freedom and independence
along with a holistic
approach to well-living that
meets physical, mental,
spiritual, intellectual and
emotional needs. In order
to meet these expectations,
there is growth in country
club and university-linked
communities, which take
advantage of the amenities
of the club or university, and
more choices in-community
with resort-style living.
