says it shows Byrd's willingness to push
in what it meant to the residents-even
when features strayed from the norm.
"We have to think beyond what's been
done in the past," Kimmel says.
taking the plunge
Not every senior living community is willing
to commit the space or budget to include an
indoor saline pool with a hot tub, lazy river,
and slide. But for continuing care retirement
community Rose Villa in Portland, Ore., it
represents how including unique elements
can expand the possibilities for residents'
everyday living.
The slide, in particular, became the
passion project of CEO Vassar Byrd in the

campus's Phase 1 redevelopment. But the
project team was hesitant-non-revenuegenerating features with high price tags
often end up on the value-engineering
chopping block. In fact, the pool wasn't
even included in initial drawings until Byrd
the envelope. "Her philosophy is that
if you make things available to seniors,
they'll do it-not all of them, but a lot
of them will. And it creates this sense
of vibrancy and community," he says.
There's another bonus to the pool and
slide, too, says Bob Dowty, principal at
R+H Construction: "The grandchildren
love it."
Similarly, Byrd says she insisted on
adding a rooftop lounge to one of the
new Town Center buildings to serve as
an outdoor party space, again despite
no revenue tied to it.
"She was relentless about holding
onto those things," Kimmel says. When
budget conversations inevitably arose,
the value of each line item was found
