Common sense

The EFA Expo & Conference is colocating with Medtrade Spring, pairing two unique
perspectives on senior living

W

hat defines a senior living com-

munity today continues to evolve.
On one end, operators are moving away from the sprawling high-rises of
old to create intimate neighborhoods and
household models of care to better answer
residents' desire and need for a homelike
environment.
On the other end are individuals who prefer another option-their own homes.
As aging in place continues to become a
solution for many alongside traditional care
facilities, a new opportunity is created for the
design community to lend its expertise in designing for seniors across these two sectors.
Recognizing this, we're changing things
up a bit at this year's Environments for Aging
Expo & Conference by colocating the show
with Medtrade Spring (produced by Emerald
Expositions, which also produces the EFA
Expo). Medtrade Spring-and its larger counterpart, Medtrade, held in October-brings
together home medical equipment providers,
home healthcare professionals, and manufacturers of home healthcare products and
technology. The goal is to offer both sides
of the spectrum a glimpse into each other's
worlds to develop a better understanding of
the new dynamics of senior living.
EFA Expo attendees can expect the same
event you've come to know, but here are
some details on where you may meet some
new friends.

Educational sessions
The following six educational sessions span the tracks "Successful
Aging in the Home and Community" and "Caregiving" and are open to
attendees of both shows.
E03-Building Homes for the Future
A large number of older people prefer to
remain in their own homes rather than move
to senior housing, including those with
dementia. In 2015, De Fiddes Design was
asked to design and construct an apartment
suitable for someone living with dementia to
be showcased at the International Alzheimer's Conference. This case study session
will share the resulting design and how it
answers specific memory care needs.

E08-Designing for the Senses:
Principles for a Biophilic Adult Day
Care Center for Enhanced Well-being
This session will explain why relationships between architecture and nature
should be considered in the design of built
environments for older adults by discussing the scientific and medical reasons
behind nature having a positive effect on
health and well-being. Using case study
examples, this presentation will show
how to design an adult day care center to
stimulate the senses, enhance perception
and cognition, provide self-esteem, and
encourage independence.

E13-Union Village: The Healthy
City of Tomorrow Is Here Today
Union Village is a 172-acre, mixeduse, wellness-focused development
in Henderson, Nev. Presenters will demonstrate how an integration concept
used in the design provides opportunities to reduce costs, improve wellness,
and stabilize chronic diseases for
seniors. Key components of the design
integration include services, wellness,
and intergenerational concepts, with
drivers of flexibility, safety, security,
and technology. The design features of
this project will show how promenades,
