ALA's last annual conference in Washington D.C. was
one of the richest I've ever attended. Together with
my colleagues and friends of the Greater Los Angeles
Chapter, we were able to expand our horizons.
We made technical visits to two law firms, and we
were received by their respective administrators.
We were able to walk through the work premises,
ask questions, and experience two different law firm
business model profiles.
The first office was Venable LLP, founded in 1900, in
Baltimore. We were greeted by the senior director of
administration, Ms. Laura W. Sandifer, who took us to
the archive area, and the mock trial room which had a
jury box, judge desk, video tapes, and also served for
disaster, leadership, technology and distance learning.
It also contained an outsourced graphic designer, an
events area (200 events were held in 2017), a legal
practice floor (with its multipurpose tables, to work
standing or sitting, walking room while working and
internal meeting rooms) and an in-house restaurant for its
employees. Venable is an office specializing in litigation,
government relations and corporate law, with 700
attorneys and 1,600 members.
The second destination was Relman Dane & Colfax PLC,
where were greeted by the office administrator, Ms. Emily
Christianson. Emily hosted a meeting with one of the
partners, Michael Allen. Mr. Allen explained that the office

is fully guided by the mission to fight against discrimination
in the area of civil rights. They work with difficult cases, in
areas that people never want to pursue and they prefer to
be free to choose the cases they work on. The firm has 23
lawyers, 8 partners, 8 paralegals, and a spirit that everyone
does what is needed and everyone has the opportunity to
participate in the cases.
Continuing the pre-conference GLA ALA program, we had
the opportunity to visit important sites of the American
Capitol, such as the National Gallery, the Air and Space
Museum at the Smithsonian, and the National Archives. We
took the assassination of Abraham Lincoln walking tour,
starting in front of the White House, and finishing at Ford's
Theater. And finally, we had a guided Capitol tour, and were
allowed to enter internal work areas, such as meeting rooms
of congressional committees and private libraries. We used
the underground tunnels to get access to the main building,
where we visited the public areas, like the original Supreme
Court, the old Senate, and the summit room. We also had
the privilege of seeing the Washington Memorial from
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan's private balcony.
During the conference in Maryland, in addition to the
excellent keynote speakers John Quinones, host of the
program What would you do? from ABC News and Vernice
Armour, America's first African-American female combat
pilot, we attended countless sessions to enhance our
learning. We also had the opportunity to meet friends
from Brazil and the US. There were working meetings with
