BUSINESS PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Michael Kemps
Innovative Computing Systems

As we approach our thirtieth year in business, I look
back with tremendous appreciation and humility. Many
of my closest friendships and trusted partnerships are
with members of the Greater Los Angeles Association
of Legal Administrators. I cannot possibly express my
sincere gratitude for all that you have each done to share
feedback, support our business and allow us to continue
providing guidance and leadership to our community.
This spotlight is intended to provide insight into our
business - but also serves as an opportunity for me to
personally express my gratitude to numerous people
who were catalysts in the development of this
unbelievable company.
For those unfamiliar, I am the CEO and Founder of
Innovative Computing Systems, Inc. After an early start
in technology at the ripe age of thirteen, I began my
"career" by developing Bulletin Board Systems with
two friends. I was blessed with the opportunity to be
offered a part-time position with a computer reseller. The
owner of this business did me the favor of a lifetime by
insisting I take over providing support for an irate legal
administrator that managed a tax and estate planning
boutique - Kate Wiemans. After successfully recovering
critical, lost data, I gained a friend for life - and she
became my first mentor in the legal profession. We spent
countless hours together, and I was indoctrinated into
the unique personalities, requirements and peculiarities
of our industry. While many in the technology sector were
focused on horizontal solutions, I realized quickly that I
had found my home with a vertical specialization in the
legal profession.
In 1989, I founded what is now Innovative Computing
Systems - fifty of the most dedicated, hardworking,
committed team members I could wish for. Our clients
are law firms, corporate law departments and a small mix
of tangential professional services businesses. Offerings

have evolved over our nearly 30 years in business. As
technology has progressed, so has our mission. Simply
stated, we implement and maintain current and stable
technology environments for our clients. Our dedication
to integrity, accountability, collaboration, innovation and
respect is unmatched.
Investing in a technology business as an engineer
with knowledge of the legal profession provided a
strong start. One of the most significant influences in
my career was the adoption of standardized processes
and procedures, influenced by Michael Gerber's
The E-Myth Revisited. My business coach and dear
friend, Donna Uzelac (https://www.emyth.com/

provided life-long guidance and was instrumental in
developing my leadership and management skills. She
helped me transform our business, as she has done for
many others. One of Donna's greatest success stories
was guiding the CEO of Otterbox, the company famous
for its mobile phone cases, through their formative
growth years. For all her energy, patience,
and love - I am forever grateful.
In 1997, while working through a challenging
WordPerfect-Word and Docs Open implementation,
I met our dear friend, Dodie Edelstein (https://www.
linkedin.com/in/dodieedelstein/). Dodie is well known
throughout California - but particularly in the San
Francisco Bay Area. Her seasoned ability to provide
training and application support for law firms, and
specifically on behalf of lawyers, is unparalleled. Dodie
entrusted me with an introduction to a firm that was in
difficult shape technologically: Cooper, White & Cooper
LLP (http://www.cwclaw.com). From that moment, Mark
Schreiber and Jed Solomon, the firm's technology and
managing partners, as well as Robin Compton - now
the firm's chief administrative officer - would become
my corporate counsel and close friends. These four
