WOMEN I ADMIRE - Members' Dedications to Women they Admire

Notorious RBG
men's liberation, fighting not just for the women left
behind, but for the men who were discriminated against
as well.
This was clearly demonstrated in Weinberger v.
Wiesenfeld. When Stephen Wiesenfeld's wife died in
childbirth, she was the principal source of income for
the family. When Wiesenfeld applied for socials security
he was told that while his son could benefit he could
not. This was one of the early cases RBG argued before
the Supreme Court. The court decided unanimously in
favor of Wiesenfeld. Her record of victories and appeals,
would reshape U.S. gender law forever.

Notorious RBG, a woman I greatly admire. There are
many women I admire starting with my own mother to
friends who challenge themselves and achieve goals in
spite of the obstacles they face. However Ruth Bader
Ginsberg has always fascinated me since I read Jeffery
Toobin's The Nine. Notorious RBG sounds more like a
gangster. However Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsberg has this soft little tiny voice, and yet she can say
really devastating things in that quiet voice.
She was wary of any laws that purported to shield
women from the harsh world outside the home. As she
wrote in her very first Supreme Court brief, "The pedestal
upon which women have been placed has all too often,
upon closer inspection, been revealed as a cage."
For most of her two decades at the Supreme Court,
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, like her colleagues, was someone
unknown to most Americans. Despite the fact that
lawyers and academics had long dubbed her "the
Thurgood Marshall of Women's Rights," in person
Ginsburg was diminutive and soft-spoken.
A staunch courtroom advocate for the fair treatment of
women and working with the ACLU's Women's Rights
Project, she was appointed to the Supreme Court by
President Clinton in 1993. RBG is insistent that her work
is not just about women's rights, it's about women's and

While many people speculate as to when the 85-yearold justice will retire, any assumption of frailty would be
utterly misplaced. She can probably do more pushups
that you. Ginsburg works with a personal trainer in the
Supreme Court's exercise room, and can lift more than
both Justices Breyer and Kagan.
Ginsburg has not missed a day of oral arguments, not
even when she was undergoing chemotherapy for
pancreatic cancer or the day after her husband passed
away in 2010. Justice Ginsburg has proven time and
again that she is a force to be reckoned with, and those
who doubt her capacity to effectively complete her
judicial duties need only to look at her record in oral
arguments, where she is still the among the most avid
questioners on the bench today.
What on earth are we going to do without her on the
Court someday? n
